Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Under the direction of the Director of Care, ensure that the appropriate requirements of the Fixing Long Term Care Act, all Omni standards, policies and procedures and other pertinent legislated standards and requirements within the nursing department.
  • Maintain the established systems of management reporting and internal control within the department as directed.
  • Provide input into the development and implementation of policies and procedures, which reflect the Mission, Vision and Values of the home.
  • Make recommendations to the Director of Care and Registered Nurse for the purchase of supplies and equipment for the department; assist the Director of Care and RN to obtain maximum benefit from financial resources.
  • Train, supervise and assist in the evaluation of the performance of non-registered nursing staff with guidance from the Director of Care and RN.
  • Document and sign details of any personnel problems and submit to the Director of Care or her designate; initiate disciplinary action when necessary in accordance with home policy and procedure; reinstruct employees in acceptable behaviour and/or performance.
  • Perform professional responsibilities and demonstrate conduct in accordance with the Standards of Practice established by the College of Nurses of Ontario; perform duties in accordance with the policies and procedures of the home.
  • Function as an educational resource to non-registered personnel.
  • Delegate responsibilities appropriate to the provision of quality nursing care to non-registered nursing staff in accordance with their job descriptions.
  • Dispense medications and provide direct nursing care and treatments as instructed by the Director of Care and RN in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of a current, appropriate and individualized plan of care for each resident as a member of the Multidisciplinary Care Team.
  • Monitor the provision of resident care by all staff in the department in accordance with the physician’s orders and the established plan of care; promptly correct deficiencies when identified, instruct personnel in correct procedures.
  • Ensure that accurate and complete documentation of nursing observations and resident care is maintained.
  • Adhere to established communications procedures with medical personnel and other healthcare specialists, managers and staff of other departments, Ministry of Long Term Care officials, social service workers, clergy, residents and their family members and coworkers to ensure continuity of quality nursing care.
  • Provide input to Director of Care with respect to the provision of in-service education and orientation programs for nursing staff.
  • Contribute to the multidisciplinary resident care conferences to ensure an efficient and meaningful process.
  • Provide assistance as directed to ensure an appropriate and effective flow of communication and information between staff on all shifts.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the established staffing pattern for the department; cover shifts when necessary in accordance with established call in procedures; when circumstances prevent maximum coverage, under the direction of the RN, reassign duties appropriately to ensure that the needs of the residents are met.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement and Risk Management activities as directed by the Director of Care and RN.
  • Ensure the maintenance of a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors; establish and enforce the expectation that hazardous conditions and actions are promptly reported and corrected; apply the principles and standards of Safety First, using consistency in the application of policies and procedures which have been developed to provide a safe work environment for all staff.
  • Ensure security of the building, equipment and supplies by keeping keys in own possession at all times.
  • Represent the home at appropriate community and professional meetings; attend all workshops, in-service education sessions and other meetings scheduled in the home as directed by the Director of Care and RN.
  • When performing the function of charge nurse, direct all staff and residents in the event of an emergency.
  • Provide assistance as directed to enhance the volunteer and public relations programs.
  • Represent support of and enthusiasm for each of the Omni core programs.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Credentials

Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses 

  • Eligible for licensure as a practical nurse in the province of Ontario
  • Completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination
  • CPR Certificate
  • First Aid Certificate
