Job Description

Fernandes Marine Services Ltd is looking for passionate, enthusiastic, hard-working, and self-motivated Marine Surveyor to join immediately.

Location: Unit 317, 500 2 Ave W, Prince Rupert, BC V8J 3T6

Title: Marine Surveyor

Positions Available: One (1)

Anticipated Start date: As soon as possible

Compensation: $46.82 per hour

Work hours: 30 hours/week

Terms: Permanent Full-Time

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect merchant vessel hulls, cargo holds, deck fittings, machinery, and safety equipment to verify condition and ensure compliance with class, flag-state, Transport Canada, and international regulations like SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISM.

  • Conduct on-hire and off-hire condition surveys, bunker quantity surveys (BQS), and checks for vessel condition and cleanliness before loading or discharge.

  • Perform draft readings, sounding/ullage, water-cut, and temperature measurements.

  • Calculate and certify fuel/lube and cargo quantities, including full reconciliation against transfer or delivery documents.

  • Carry out surveys for cargo condition and damage.

  • Supervise loading and discharge operations as well as hold and hatch cover integrity tests using ultrasonic or hose methods.

  • Witness the sampling and testing of bulk commodities and petroleum products, verifying procedures, securing seals, and documenting the chain of custody.

  • Prepare detailed written reports including photographs, findings, measurements, calculations, and recommendations.

  • Issue certificates of condition or quantity for insurers and clients.

  • Liaise with various parties, including ship Masters, Chief Engineers, terminal personnel, charterers, and P&I clubs, to coordinate operations and resolve discrepancies.

  • Use and maintain specialized inspection equipment, such as gas detectors, ultrasonic thickness gauges, and UTI tapes/thermometers, while keeping calibration records.

  • Comply with company HSE procedures and safety regulations, including completing toolbox talks, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and site permits.

  • Investigate incidents or claims related to equipment damage, cargo loss, or contamination; collect evidence and provide expert input or statements.

  • Travel to various ports and terminals for call-outs, including rotation-based evening and weekend work, and submit documentation in a timely manner.

  • Mentor trainees and junior surveyors and contribute to the improvement of company quality systems and survey procedures.

 

Education

College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 year to 2 years or equivalent experience

Experience

2 years to less than 3 years
